No time expiry in technet

The latest version of technet is about to be shipped and the latest versions of the software no longer have time expiries which means you are not forced to hurry those exams through in less than 90 days, which is probably impossible if doing the whole of the MSCE course. Hopefully it comes with a version of Microsoft Virtual PC as that would be great to install the various pieces of software on one powerful machine for testing/rollback purposes and for also safely testing the reliability and effectiveness of their new AntiSpyware Software as per Mikes posting

Unlocking OSD Locked Fujitsu TFT screen

At a customer site, they had a fujitsu monitor that was really dark but when you went to change the contrast it came up with “OSD Locked”. The official manual that I could find for google said to press buttons 3 and 4 and power it on but this didn’t work. However holding down the select/menu button and pushing the power button and keep holding the select button down until the menu appears and hey presto, one unlocked osd! Repeat the process to lock it again.

Firefox gives no disk in drive error message

Ever since yesterday, Firefox was giving me the message “There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk in ‘\Device\Harddisk1\DR6′” (see pic) whenever I tried to save a file in firefox (or in some cases open a file from the downloaded files dialog box.
I think this started when I removed my SD card from the card reader whilst Windows was still trying to write to it (oops!) as it complained (despite having done it a couple of secs after the app I was using (explorer) had updated its screen AND write caching is disabled on the drive)
A reboot of the box didn’t fix the problem and a search in google had lots of people with similar error messages but from different applications but no fix. However I found that by inserting the card back into the card reader and then using the stop hardware function in the notification area the problem, so far, seems to have gone away.

PocketPC reinstall

I decided to reinstall the pocketpc today with a factory reset and then a reinstall of the programs. I had found that Word, notes and contacts were hanging when I went to save them and Microsoft Media Player just wouldn’t start up.
Therefore I’ve reinstalled the following apps:-
MS Activation for reader ( to read the occasional ebook)
TomTom GPS + CityMaps (the maps were already saved to SD card so that cut down on backup/installation time)
MagiButton (allow proper close of applications)
Macromedia Flash player
Adobe Reader 7
MpegTV PocketTV
Pocketmind PocketMusic
GPX Sonar (old beta version as the newest only works on pocketpc2003)
kevtris (essential for those 10 minute breaks)
PocketWarrior – wifi checker
Pocket Streets & Trips 2005. Even though I got the USA version, there are uk maps to download!
total commander – file utility
Windows Theme Switch Today
Real Audio for PocketPC

Update After all that the pocketpc is still hanging – BUT I’ve found out that it only hangs if I have the SD card in the slot. If I power off the Axim, remove the sd card and then power it back on again, the axim resumes where it was and *instantly* saves the file. Now to work out why it does this in Word and notes (that I’ve discovered so far). The SD card is fine as the other apps seem to write to it ok (Thanks to treasure realm by deleting ignore_my_documents from the root of the SD card Word now works great! (So I’ve just wasted 4 hours restoring and wiping, reinstalling and wiping)

Spam Kings: book review

Whilst I was in America I took a couple of books out of the library. I only managed to finish reading one of them, Spam Kings: The Real Story behind the High-Rolling Hucksters Pushing Porn, Pills, and %*@)# Enlargements. Its a “biography” of spammers and the story behind how they work(ed) and the antispammers fight to get them brought to justice and stop them spamming. Its very entertaining and you don’t need to be a net nerd to understand the book either. At some points, when it tells you how much they were making a month, it shows why it is worth being a spammer….until the jail sentence catches up with them!
If you’ve ever read Cuckoo’s egg by Clifford Stoll then you will know what to expect (this book is about the tracking down of hackers) and is also a recommended read. The other book that I didn’t get a chance to read was Dave Gorman’s Googlewhack adventure but as that is available at Congleton library I’ll get it out from there now.
For those of you in Cheshire who want to see if books available from amazon are in your library, drag library to your links/toolbar and then click the link when you have a book from amazon.co.uk in your browser.
