Got FeedOnFeed to work from a cron job by using the following syntax. It was pretty obvious really – don’t know why I didn’t think of it beforehand. curl -s -S http://user:[email protected]/directory/filename.php This means I don’t have to rely on the machine in the office being kept switched on.
Looks like they’ve caught the idiot who created the MSBlast worm…now they just need to get the scum who wrote SoBigBBC NEWS | Technology | Youth suspected of net attack
I guess the day I receive a netgear adsl router is a bad day to read that Flawed Netgear Routers Flood University of Wisconsin Internet Time Server! It will be interesting to see what version of the firmware the product is running (before connecting it up)
I’m sure that looking after loads of screaming toddlers has got to be less stressful and easier to deal with than BT, Demon, ISDN Dialups and ADSL installations!
Another funny 404 page – requires flash and sound – courtesy of homestar. From what I can tell this is part of a a series of cartoons and not really a 404 – but it is quite good though!
What sort of ISP blocks pings and traceroutes on their routers (allegedly to cut down on virus traffic) so you have no chance of troubleshooting connectivity problems?
My year of hosting with Amenworld was up yesterday. They had been sending me warnings for the past month and I had already moved my web and email to another company, Redirection.net but hadn’t changed the tag on the domain. It took 4 repeated emails, each one more snotty than the previous one, to their support site before someone actually answered my question and said that yes I would be able to modify the tags if required after the years hosting was up. This sounded great…..until the day before the year was up when they tell me that actually all details will be removed and the domain detagged! A VERY snotty and upset email was sent to them explaining that I would therefore move away from them but this process could take more than half a day. An email was sent back saying that they wouldn’t detag for a month. Today I tried to log in and was told that I couldn’t modify anything as the domain had expired…fortunately by this time the tag changes had already taken place. I wouldn’t recommend AmenWorld for hosting as you get conflicting answers from their tech support (and this is not the first time either) and then they wait until you have less than 24 hours to make your changes – probably so that you would normally have no choice but to extend for one more year…..Grrrrrrr

It was London’s turn for a powercut yesterday, occuring at 6.20pm, right in the middle of rushhour. Thankfully though most places got power back after 30 minutes and power fully restored after 2.5 hours. Government ministers are squawking noises demanding to know how it happened but noone mentioned that at least it wasn’t as bad as America’s blackout with only a few areas of London affected.
I’m fed up with having my lap heat up every time I use it at home so I’m on the lookout for a decent laptop cooler. The ByteCC looks good and has had favourable reviews but it doesn’t look like it would be any good on the lap, but good for a desktop holder. The Acrylic cooler looks a better choice and similar to the CyberCooler. The Laptop desk does not need any power as it doesn’t actually use fans so I’m not sure how effective it would be. I really need to see/try one before I purchase it. I wonder if Argos do one? (no they don’t)
