Library elf is a good webpage that allows you to get email notifications and rss feeds of your books that you have borrowed/waiting to borrow from the library. Although the Columbus Metropolitan Library already has email notification, the good thing about this is that you can list all the items from all your family members in one place. That way you know who has what out (or if your wife has reserved something under your library card!)
I’m still looking for a book reading tracker app and haven’t found one yet. However, this might be a good application to get started with .net
For some reason the rss feed in my WordPress installation had got broken along with the permalinks. Initially I just thought it was the rss feed (as that is what I was reading). RSS feeds can be broken if you are not on the latest version of wordpress, which you should be due to security problems, so I was a bit baffled as to why it wasn’t working. Rebuilding the permalinks seemed to fix it though.
You can compare the two mapping services at http://www.jonasson.org/maps/ and you can see how naff the msn service is for the Ohio area.
Update Oops – a bit embarrassing when I managed to get the html code for this post wrong!
This ones for Anna –
We also went to the zoo yesterday and we were amazed that a certain Anna was not with us as we heard all about how vultures keep themselves cool by pooing down their legs and how when they are scared they throw up their last meal at the predator as the stink will distract them. A couple of minutes later after hearing this wonderful news we were able to see this in action as the vulture flapped around from the handlers arms, scaring a lady right next to it, and then as it was flapping upside down it got scared……..
There were not as many photo opportunities with the animals as there was last time. I think this was due to the heat and most of the animals were sleeping. There were also a lot more young kids around who kept running in front of me as I was trying to take photos or they would yell at the animals and scare them off – I need to find out if the zoo has adult only times. The gorilla’s were true to form though and were pretty active and they still seemed to enjoy frightening the visitors by suddenly slapping the glass that they had their faces pressed to.
Yesterday I got the news that I didn’t get the job that I was hoping for. A shame as the company seemed like a really nice place to work at/for. The HR person was really good though and gave me two phone numbers of contacts in recruiting companies that I’ll be chasing up early next week. I did come down with a cold yesterday so I’m spending today in bed with the old laptop and wireless adapter as I’ve finished reading the library book (Fear Nothing by Dean Koontz) that I started yesterday evening.
The preceding post was because I signed up for 43 things via allconsuming.net. I was hoping that it would give me the facility to have an online list of books that I’ve read from the library along with the ability to have a list of books that I’d like to borrow/buy. However it doesn’t look like this 43things is the way to go about doing this. I guess I could always blog each book, pointing to amazon or something, but its not really a convenient way of doing things. I’m also looking at using MediaMan as a way of storing this information, with books that I’ve borrowed from the library going into a category called “From Library” and the books that I own going into another category called Own.
Mediaman is free tracking software for media and books and works fairly well and doesn’t have ads in it unlike the free version of dvdprofiler. DVDProfiler works great and was very easy to import my dvds off the barcodes on the covers, but its export routine is not usable by MediaMan as DVDProfiler decides to use its own internal version of the barcode (dropping the first and last digit).
So, has anyone got any suggestions of software/websites that will allow you to keep an online reading list? Rss feeds would be great too.
Synergy has been updated (the software kvm utility)
No Need to Click Here – I’m just claiming my feed at Feedster
For some reason my feed is not being picked up as mine at feedster.
I’m not impressed. The product ships with virus definitions dated the 12th July and running Liveupdate says there are no new defs to install (but did install product updates the first time I ran it). However the pc upstairs running Nav2005 has definitions dated the 20th July. This might not be too bad on its own if it wasn’t for the fact that NAV constantly complains that the defs are out of date and to run live update. This complaining takes the form of popup messages in the corner of the screen and a yellow coloured caution bar containing a triangle and Norton in the bottom right of the screen next to the system tray. Why they couldn’t have just put the application in the system tray like everyone else I don’t know. Right click on Norton status and select Move to System Tray.
The one plus point to having the bar is that when the application silently crashes you can tell because the bar disappears which is more noticable than having an icon in the systray disappear (which can happen with xp hiding icons when it feels like it). Yes, Nav has already crashed on me once and the only reason I noticed was because my email server refused to connect to any of my pop3 accounts yet I could ping them ok. Nav crashing had taken out the forwarding part of the proxy service but was still capturing the outgoing traffic – just not forwarding it onto the mail server. As the bar had vanished I realised what the problem was and restarted the application (and said YES I KNOW THE DEFS ARE OUT OF DATE)
Another plus point is that I can now use Google Desktop search again as it is compatible with Nav – it wasn’t with Nod32 although this isn’t really a plus point to be honest.
The beta only lasts another 14 days (although their website says 30) and I’m glad as so far the product is really awful. The initial scan of my hard disk took 6 hours for the 100gb of data (how did i get that much so quickly?) and the machine was pretty much unusable at this time as the response time was awful. It wasn’t too bad if only one application was used but switching applications would take at least 60 seconds before the new one was available.
I have posted these points to Symantec with at their feedback page and had no response back from them whatsoever. I think a beta program really should have a feedback forum so that it is possible to tell if anyone else is having the same problem and provide an ongoing support conversation with Symantec.
