can anyone recommend a good internet service that preferably doesn’t require additional services such as cable tv, phone service etc? We intend to use our mobiles for our main phone line in the house and don’t feel the need to purchase cable tv in the new house. However we do NEED internet access (and not dialup!) so any suggestions on who to use (or avoid?) (There is a cable hookup in the house already)

Time Warner will let you get roadrunner without cable, it just costs more when you only have one product line. I think the same is true for WOW.
We had WOW at our old place, and it was the best connection I had ever had. After tweaking the connection a bit, I had some downloads coming in at over 1Mps. WOW has the best upstream speed of any ISP I have had previously, too. They also did not block any ports (at least the ones I used).
Their customer service is the worst I have ever been in contact with … and that is bad when referring to a cable company. They shut off the service three times. Two of those times were for a billing error on their part, and one was for a paying error on my part.
If you do go with Time Warner, beware the installation charges. They billed me for an additional $24 and change for installing the proprietary crap, which (1) did not get installed as they do not service Linux and that was only computer here at the time, and (2) I told the installation guy not to install any software.
I hope this helps.
