MT to WordPress Migration.

I’ve just migrated the blog from the crusty old MovableType to WordPress. I was getting really fed up of really long build times in MT and only some of my pages keeping the current style. Some documents were just not getting republished. I think there may be some database corruption as I did have a few issues in the migration with Categories not being correct. I figured I could loose a couple of hundred blog posts – they were fairly old so probably out of date now anyway.

I stil have the theming, plugins, rss feed redirection etc to happen so you won’t see this post until I’m ready to switch over.

Kevin Donahue’s Export howto was very helpful but I did have to use a clean export file to get it to work correctly.

New blog name?

As part of the reinstall on the new pc I installed picassa2 on the pc and discovered that I’ve lost all the tagging information – grrrrrrr. However, I did find this picture that I had played around with a while ago and was wondering if I should change the blog name –

I actually created this post using WindowsLiveWriter – it works pretty well – I didn’t have to enter any image uploading details (although it would be nice to control where the image is uploaded too and I did have to enter the path to the MovableType cgi file but I think that is because I have removed the RSD data for this blog. Update I’m also not sure why it decided to change the font on me too – the font for this post has been edited back to the default.

Social Bookmarking alternative

Magnolia is a new social bookmarking site that is similar to delicious but has the option of making bookmarks private too. It looks really nice and seems to have good integration through the use of bookmarklets. My Magnolia homepage is available and I’ve also started a geocaching group.
I’ve yet to import my bookmarks into the site (that will be a long job!) and the only downside I’ve had so far is the fact that adding bookmarks to a group is a pretty painful process – first you add the bookmark to your page, then you have to go back and add each one to the group, with a “choose the group” followed by “edit details” page – which takes a long time when populating a lot of links (which I guess will slow down the spammers!)

A more incompetent service than Fifth Third bank!

I thought things couldn’t get much worse with the state of Banking but today I got a letter to my US address from Abbey saying that they can’t change the address to my US address! They need a notarised copy of my passport sent to them. The last time I spoke to them on the phone they only wanted a photocopy of the passport. I thought the easiest way around this would be to just close the account but it seems that despite having a valid login to my Abbey account, I don’t have any accounts attached to the account to make any payments from it. They don’t have 24 hour banking via phone, there is no email address to contact them and then they have the cheek to suggest that I might want to use their offshore banking facilities!

Quail

We went out to a thai restaurant last night and I decided to have quail as I had never had it before. With hindsight it probably was not a good idea as Quail are very small birds. There is not much meat on them and Kristens mum said it was probably pigeon but from my experience pigeons tend to be fat. Apparently the phad thai was good but as it had nuts I only had a tiny taste.

Quicken or MS Money

Which would you choose (if any?). My first reaction would be to use MS Money as I’ve heard nasty things about quicken. So I fired up the free copy that came with the computer and it started to go through the wizard. Then the autoupdate routine kicked in, it needed to restart itself so I let it. On the restart the wizard didn’t resume (or even kick in). I tried to add my bank account to the system and although it recognises the bank, it will not download the data with a message saying set up the account again or contact technical support. As the software is an OEM version, this means contacting HP and we all know where that is going to end up….So I’m off to try quicken.
