I’m staying at Jamie Oliver’s

I’m staying at Jamie Oliver’s parents pub this weekend. When I found that out I knew the food was going to be delicious. The first night I had swordfish steak – and that was massive! Really tasty too. Last night I decided to try ostrich as i’ve heard a lot about it, but never had a chance to eat it. It doesn’t taste like chicken though! It is a very dark meat, hard to describe. The taste is very powerful though. Although I enjoyed the steak I don’t think i’d have it again though. Tonight is the Sunday roast – mmmmmmm!

I went into Cambridge yesterday and did a bit of walking around the city. One of the colleges was graduating, so there were loads of people in gowns, and some in tophats! I just wish I had brought the camera with me, but I was expecting to be working the whole weekend so hadn’t bothered 🙁 The college buildings are really impressive and looked really good, although I don’t think I’d want to study there – too posh for me. The daft thing is that the Park and Ride that I took into the city centre stops at 6pm so I wasn’t able to go to the cinema as the bus would have stopped before I got out the cinema 🙁

Hi Jamie, I attend St John Houghton School in Derbyshire, and a few friends and myself are starting a campaign against fatty foods. We are trying to stop our school canteen from selling items such as turkey twizzlers. We have put up posters around the school and have permission to do this from one of the teachers. We would like it very much if you could support our campaign. Would it be possible for you to contact me via my email address?
Thanks for taking time to read this and i look forward to hearing from you, Josh (age 12, almost 13)

    School Dinners

    Dear Jamie Oliver,

With all the news about school dinners I thought I would write in just to say what I had found when I came up with my own version of a fresh and healthy product to be served in a school canteen for children.

I’m a Year 11 GCSE student at Teignmouth Community College, Devon, I am studying Food Technology as one of my GCSE options. For my project I decided to investigate school dinners available today.

One lunch time I visited the local primary school and conducted a survey of meals eaten by the children. The results showed that the majority were choosing chips and chicken nuggets. A very small selection of cold salads was available, but the children were only allowed one slice of cucumber or one quarter of a tomato or one-two slices of peppers, etc which surprised and upset me.

I decided to research what nutrients are recommened for children and then set about designing my own product.

I based my product on a Shepherds Pie and adapted it. I went through many experiments and development work, but kept in mind what might attract children to the product. I thought of colour, flavour, texture presentation and nutritional value. I even designed my own product label and named it ‘Farmhouse Pie’.

In my final receipe I included a big variety of ‘hidden’ vegetables with turkey mince, a mixture of herbs, potato for the topping and with Red Leicester cheese. For my final product I produced a freshly made pie, just how I hope it would be made in a school canteen and then a mass produced pie, the difference in colour and flavour was amazing.

Unfortunately I am not allowed to carry out a taste in the school but my family loved my ‘Farmhouse Pie’.

Do you feel my type of product could be served at a school now the Government have increased the funding for each school child, as my product aim was to incourage children to eat more vegetables?

    Dear Jamie,

This is a long shot and i’m not sure if you will even get this but i am at university studying a module called ‘social issues in primetime t.v’ and have decided to research how ‘Jamies School dinners’ has affected public opinion on children and health issues. I know there is alot of information on the web but what i really want to do is conduct some interviews with anyone involved with the project. I wondered if you could help in any way or point me in the right direction. If anyone else reads this and thinks they can help contact me by e-mail on

    [email protected]

    Thanks.

    Mr Oliver,
I am currently in a young enterprise project where the aim is to compete in making the best product, knowing you have are currently been attacking school dinners, and obesity is an on growing problem. We decided to base our product on that. And have come up with an interactive CD ROM ‘The Student Body’ which is based on how to keep a healthy life style showing ways of exercise and how to eat healthy whilst keeping a busy lifestyle. On behalf of the ‘Pro-Joe’ enterprize group i would be greatful if you could email me back asap giving a few words of your support on our product, i could also send u a complementary CD ROM. Yours Sincerely Tania (pupil of St.Josephs high school)

  17. Lisa Kirkham

    Dear Jamie,

My name is Lisa and I love your show school dinners you have done a wonderful job not just for the children but for the whole country.

I live in Australia and know that our children don’t eat well at school. If you saw the things these children take for lunch you would die. I think that you should come to australia and work with me to get the australian schools to introduce school dinners in every school.

Australia is a very busy country and the children are suffering, being fed rubbish because it is quick and easy for the parents before they go off to work. I think Australia would welcome the school dinners with open arms because they would know their children are being properly nourished and this means their brains will retain more information helping them to learn, it will also help with sport, you always perform better when you’ve eaten a nutritious meal and not fatty junk.

Australia needs you it is a fact that this country has increased dramatically in childhood obesity, this is caused by feeding our children unhealthy fatty foods.

I would love to work with you and get this country and our children into shape.

Please email me and tell me what you think of my idea.
