I’ve taken the GPS outside in the UK a couple of times and so far I’ve not been as impressed as I was with it in the US. The coverage of satellite GPS in the UK is a LOT worse than in the states. I was getting 6 satellites in the US, so far I’ve only had 2 over here, and none of the bars in the satellite screen have gone black (which it should). So far I’ve not been able to get better than a 2d fix. The really annoying thing is that when I get to my home town the unit warns me that I’ve got bad GPS coverage. All of the above have been whilst in the car so I may get better coverage outside it, but the unit was used primarily in the car whilst in the states for navigating (see next entry) unless I was actually looking for a geocache.
Trying to install the .net framework 1.1 setup program so I can then install intravnews on the laptop. However when I try to run the program I get the error message “Error 1325.’andrew.helsby’ is not a valid short file name.” The filename referred to is my username on the computer. A search in google does not help as there are lots of similar problems but no definite answer on how to fix it. Ironically the solution in technet is that its a fault in the msi file and that a patch should be installed on the pc of the producer of the msi file!
Update By logging on as another user on the computer I was able to install the patch. The weird thing is that the other user also doesn’t fit the 8.3 username format either.
Simmons Consulting have a freebee addon,Zempt This to Internet Explorer that allows you to select text in IE (shame its ie only) and then right click and send the text through to zempt to publish.
Cute game where you have to help the pigs reach the cakes
Went to see Cats at the Regent theatre in Stoke last night. I can’t comment on how good the performance was compared to other shows as it was the first time I’ve ever seen Cats. I was very impressed and really enjoyed the show – the costumes were really good and the hydraulic platform at the end of the show was good too. I did feel sorry for the people in the front row though as the smoke that hid the platform ramp billowed off the stage and right into their faces. Incidentally my father was one of the engineers who worked on the original platform at Cats in London.
Thanks to Kelly, use the tips in this google post for amusement whilst Lord of the Rings plays
If women ruled the world from Chasing Daisy – pretty funny.
Chris blogged about his spam for an IPOD that he hadn’t ordered and how he checked google before ringing. Another link I found on bugtraq tells that the police were receiving 500 calls an hour. The official statement from the Cambridgeshire police is here

Matt Goyer had an interview with Microsoft and Amazon and has blogged about his experiences. Very interesting reading and quite daunting – especially if you are not a programmer!
