High CPU usage – or not?

Anyone got any theories on this? One of our customers has a box where task manager icon is showing a high cpu usage, the bottom of taskman shows 67% used, yet the cpu usage on the processes window shows 97% idle at the same time. Screen shot shown. If the server is rebooted the problem goes away for about a week before it starts to happen again. tl_server is our telnet server application so it is normal behaviour to have lots of copies running.

Maybe they are not measuring over the same period of time?
I’ve just tried it on a busy box of mine and the 2 numbers went out of step under load, however the load on this box is just a single thread on a dual CPU box. It wouldn’t be a dual processor box would it?

    Looks Orable to me 🙂

Sort of…..although I doubt it will help you.
I downloaded process explorer from sysinternals .com and ran this which showed a high cpu% given over to the Interrupts (50%).
Looking on the internet at http://tinyurl.com/25724 this mentions looking at the Processor interrupts/sec and states that a value exceeding 1000 is a hardware problem. Problem is I then called out an engineer who came on site and ran diagnostics and found nothing wrong! But I then subsequently found out it could be a problem with using access odbc to access an sql table on the server where the user doesn’t actually have rights to attach to the database! I doubt this will help you, but process explorer might do.
