Month: July 2002
Hmm – apparently the W2k servers that my host uses came under attack yesterday – what worries me is that they weren’t protected in the first place……Their email is as follows
At approximately 18:30 2nd July 2002, our network came under attack from a new
worm/virus, similar to the code red worm of last year.
Once infected by this worm, these machines began to scan the Internet for other
vulnerable hosts to infect, this created a massive amount of traffic within our
network, saturating certain links and overloading routers.
Our London based servers which include control panel, mail and UNIX web site
services, were largely unaffected, however access to our Doncaster based data
centre which hosts Windows 2000 web sites and the majority of customer dedicated
and co-located servers was slow at best.
Due to the nature of this attack, it was particularly difficult and time
consuming to diagnose, however once the cause had been established, the infected
hosts were immediately disconnected from the network and normal service was
resumed at approximately 00:00 3rd July 2002.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this unfortunate incident, and
thank you for your patience.
The Norm is a neat cartoon – seems to be a cross between Rose is Rose and Dilbert!
Well cloudmark have updated their Spamnet application to beta3 and at first glance its much improved. It certainly seems to be working properly now, blocking spam as it gets downloaded and the blocking function also works.
