For the last few months, we have been studying the Book of Romans each Sunday morning.
Whatever your Christian background, experience or understanding, Romans is undoubtedly a 'Big Book'. This is true on several levels:
(1) it is 'big' in significance and influence upon church history
(2) it is 'big' in the difficulty of some of its concepts and, in places, the intricacy of its argument
(3) it is 'big' in regard to the lofty doctrines it teaches
(4) it is 'big' in regard to the amount of material, both written and preached, that exists to help us understand it
(5) it is 'big' because it is amongst the longest NT letters
Our approach to preaching through Romans has been to find the middle ground between 'motorway preaching', where you whiz through the countryside observing major landmarks only, and 'B road preaching', where every signpost, every hedgerow, and every flower is examined in some detail.
Although this approach cannot hope to please everybody all of the time, it will give to us the plot line and major teaching of Romans, whilst accomodating the inexperience of others. Pray for your pastor in preparation!
As I ponder these issues, and particularly as I consider method and approach to preaching the larger sections of God's Word, I occasionally come across articles which make me think. I thought I would share with you the articles that follow, as I found them helpful.
Happy reading!
