Everybody has a pet hate. Mine is the bag of heresy containing statues, images and icons. The following rant is therefore hardly surprising.
Why is it that so many Christians nurse idols in their midst? Don't even begin to talk about the idols of the West - celebs, football icons, pop stars etc. Don't mention the Great Temples of Materialism - the out-of-town retail park or huge pseudo-American shopping 'malls' springing up all over the UK. No need to go there just now. I am talking about things much closer to home.
Why is it that so many churches have crosses, crucifixes, stained glass or other objects? You would think that here in India it would be even clearer - many of the believers have been delivered from idols; they understand idols and what they represent, helping the mind of the worshipper to focus on their god. Why then do so many believers exchange the idols of paganism for their own personal plastic Jesus?
Seeing the gaudy and golden statues of Hinduism and people at worship before them is really shocking. It is even more shocking to see imposing idols of Jesus outside certain churches.
No wonder most Indians are confused at the nature of true Christianity.
